Central Horse Retirement was established in 1999 with a clear and unwavering purpose — to provide a calm, safe and professionally managed environment dedicated exclusively to the retirement and ongoing care of horses.
As a family-run business, we combine over 50 years of international equine experience with a consistent, welfare-led approach that places each horse’s comfort, routine and individual needs at the centre of everything we do. Our team also holds a range of relevant equine qualifications and ongoing professional development, supporting the high standard of care and informed decision-making we provide every day.
We do not operate as a mixed-use yard. There are no ridden services, no high-traffic activity and no competing demands. Our focus is solely on providing a peaceful and structured environment where horses can settle, relax and be cared for properly in their later years.
Over the years, we have developed extensive knowledge in managing age-related conditions, including PPID, laminitis, arthritis, diminished organ function and sensory loss. This is combined with the empathy, patience and careful observation required to support horses experiencing discomfort or pain, ensuring they remain as comfortable and settled as possible.
This knowledge underpins the way we manage every aspect of daily care — from weight management and mobility support to behavioural changes and ongoing health monitoring — ensuring that each horse receives attentive, informed and appropriate support.
Our reputation has been built on consistent results and longevity, always balanced with a strong focus on quality of life. We understand that caring for elderly horses is not only about maintaining health, but also about recognising when their needs change — and, when necessary, having the experience, honesty and compassion to know when the time is right.
Owners trust us not only for the quality of care we provide, but for the reassurance that every decision is made with the horse’s welfare, dignity and best interests at heart.
At Central Horse Retirement, we believe that retirement is not a reduction in care, but a transition into a stage of life that requires greater attention, understanding and thoughtful management — delivered with quiet professionalism and genuine care.
